Vantastic?

Jeremy Clarkson was recently reported as visiting this conurbation for TV filming. Will he I wonder have noticed what the younger, fitter men of the south coast are driving these days? Cars, being only suitable for people up to about 5 foot 9 due to windscreens coming down low to block anyone else’s vision, whatever the headroom, are being abandoned en masse by the pre beer gut generation. Or at least they are in this part of the world, Ashley Cross. I only noticed last week so haven’t had time to check out whether this is a purely local phenomenom. However, the windows on them seem to be blacked out so they look like regular vans but in fact they have windows in with seats at the back for kids, even big enough for teenagers. How long has this been going on? I just asked my new next door neighbour(no beer gut yet) and apparently the seats can go down, you need to go to Salisbury or Portland for a VW Conversion, or three legged cross for a Ford conversion. I know that for the bankers of Canford Cliffs, well one anyway, they are really handy for getting all the bikes in. The doctors round here use them for surf boards, windsurfers etc. If there are still vans with 1970’s style “vintage” as I believe it’s now called, mattresses in the back, they don’t seem very common in this neck of the woods. So not only are the younger generation (well, younger than me anyway) cycling around and annoying their elders but they are also turning their noses up at the chance to speed their way between speed cameras and make work for the osteopaths/chiro’s knocking their backs into shape, by driving vans. I have to say that although speed in cars used to be marketed as highly sexy, the reality of a big strapping chap who has injured his back by squeezing into a car built for people from the other side of the world, or even Italy is not very sexy at all. Whether it’s white or black, camper or combi, the fact that you’ve got a van is a first clue to the ladies that you can reach the pedals and you’re probably pretty fit. Vantastic. per or combi, the fact that you’ve got a van is a first clue to the ladies that you can reach the pedals and you’re probably pretty fit. Vantastic.
