RNLI lifeguards prepare to spend Christmas on the surf reef

The RNLI’s only year-round lifeguards are preparing to spend their first Christmas patrolling Boscombe’s new surf reef. Three RNLI lifeguards will provide safety cover throughout the festive season, including Christmas day.Meanwhile the charity’s volunteer lifeboat crews across the south west will be on standby, should they need to leave their families’ and celebrations to help save those in trouble at sea.

Both the RNLI volunteer crews and lifeguards are using the festive season to call upon people to support the charity by joining in the fun on SOS Day, the RNLI’s biggest annual fundraising day, on Friday 29 January 2010.

Andy Reakes, one of the RNLI lifeguards who will be on duty on Christmas day is looking forward to the festive atmosphere, he says;

‘You can’t beat a Christmas day surf and we’re all hoping that a good swell will mean the reef is working well and people can get in the water and try out their new boards or wetsuits. Although I’ll be missing Christmas lunch with my family, I’m expecting everyone to be in a happy festive mood so I think it will be a nice day.

We’d ask anyone coming down to the reef for the first time, to come and have a chat with us before they enter the water. We can advise on conditions and how the waves break on the reef. It’s not really for beginners, as there is a fairly long paddle out and the wave is pretty steep. However there is usually a small wave on the east of the pier in front of the lifeguard unit that beginners can practise on.

We’d also suggest that they are fully prepared with the appropriate clothing and equipment for the conditions as the water is extremely cold now.’

With the charity’s fundraisers gearing up for SOS Day 2010, the festive period serves as a reminder of the sacrifices the volunteer crews have to make to help save lives at sea 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Amy Shepherd, RNLI Area Fundraising Manager for Dorset says SOS Day is a great way to kick-start the New Year and raises vital funds for the charity’s volunteer crews and lifeguards;

‘SOS day is the RNLI’s biggest annual fundraising day. On Friday 29 January 2010, schools, workplaces, groups, and friends are encouraged to organise a fundraising event based on the SOS acronym. At Boscombe the RNLI lifeguards plan to raise money by a sponsored sea swim called Sea Our Speedos. However other, less energetic successes have included; Sell Old Stuff (bring and buy sale), Scoff Our Scones (afternoon tea), Sizzle Our Sausages (winter barbeque).

Last year supporters in the south west raised an astonishing £70,000 towards the training and equipment the charity’s lifeguards and volunteer lifeboat crews need to continue their lifesaving work.’
