Dragon Boat Racing for charity in Poole Park

The ancient Chinese tradition of dragon boat racing will create a colourful spectacle at the annual charity dragon boat challenge at Poole Park.

The event, Sunday 14 July, sees teams compete against each other in three heats, battling it out in a semi-finals and a final, to be crowned the winners and raise money for two local charities.

The money raised from the day is split between Poole Hospital Charity which supports all wards and departments at Poole Hospital and Diverse Abilities Plus, the only Dorset disability charity that supports children and adults and their families throughout their life.

Pam Bell, fundraising coordinator for Poole Hospital Charity, said: “There are still places available and we’re urging residents, organisations and businesses to sign up – training is provided so all you’ll need is enthusiasm and persuasive technique to raise sponsorship money.

“It’s a great event for team building, or a fun day for family and friends and it raises money for two great local charities.”

There will be an award ceremony for the winners, as well as prizes for the teams that raise the most sponsorship and come in best fancy dress.

Last year’s highest fundraisers, Where’s Wally, was made up of staff from the children’s unit at Poole Hospital and are back this year to defend their title.

Children’s unit resource coordinator, Kenneth Mackenzie, was part of the Where’s Wally team. He said: “It was a fantastic day; we really enjoyed ourselves and were thrilled to win the highest fundraiser award. It is a great day out for all the family, if you’re taking part or a spectator.”

Last year 20 teams took part to raise more than £25,000 for Poole Hospital Charity and Diverse Abilities Plus.

Registration for the event, which takes places from 10am-4pm, closes on 11 June 2013. The team entry fee is £170 – £10 per person for a full team.

Anyone over the age of 12 can be part of a team, as long as they are confident in deep water while wearing a buoyancy aid, but all participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
