Have your say on protecting Churchill Gardens

Local residents are being encouraged to have their say as a consultation seeking views on how Churchill Gardens in Boscombe could be protected gets underway.

Churchill Gardens is one of 21 conservation areas in Bournemouth, recognised for its special architectural and historic interest.  A Conservation Area Appraisal for Churchill Gardens is underway which explains the history of the area and what makes it special as well as inviting feedback from the public to help inform how the area should be protected and improved for the future.

Our aim is to make it a place where people aspire to live.”

Once consultation is complete the Council will produce a detailed plan showing how Churchill Gardens will be improved and it will also provide guidance to property owners, developers and decision makers regarding future plans for the area. The appraisal highlights the following key aspects that will help improve Churchill Gardens:

  • Physical enhancements – seek to reinstate positive features such as original housing features that have been removed in the past including balcony railings and boundary walls. The Council will also be considering a long-term tree replenishment scheme.
  • Townscape Heritage Initiative – the Council is seeking Heritage Lottery funding to support an external refurbishment programme of properties in the area.
  • Regeneration and ‘Homes for Boscombe’ strategy – the Council aims to tackle the social issues affecting Churchill Gardens and the wider Boscombe area through a regenerationprogramme working with a number of partner organisations. One aim is to reduce the number of HMOs (Homes of Multiple Occupation) and convert them into self-contained flats.

Councillor Jane Kelly, Cabinet Member for Partnerships and Regeneration, said: “It is really important that we preserve and enhance this conservation area and that residents are given the opportunity to share their feedback on what improvements should be made. Churchill Gardens has some fantastic examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture and we must put plans in place to enhance this area and ensure that it is protected in the future.
