Campaign for lift at Pokesdown Station

Pokesdown StationA campaign has been launched by the Pokesdown Community forum asking Network Rail to install a lift at Pokesdown station. The platform for the station is below street level and accessed by steps, which cause difficulties for people with mobility problems or those with young children in pushchairs.

Funds do exist to make stations accessible under a scheme called  Access for All. The fund has paid for 150 stations to be improved since 2006, benefitting  disabled, elderly and very young passengers. A further £100million will be used from 2015 to 2019, though Pokesdown is not currently being considered for this money.

The petition was launched by Andy Jones, Secretary of the Pokesdown Community Forum. Andy said:

“The Pokesdown Community Forum is currently in consultation with South West Trains and Network Rail in order to try and remedy the totally unsatisfactory situation where the elderly, disabled and those with young families are unable to access the station platforms.

“Members of the Forum Committee and various local area representatives will be meeting the local MP, Tobias Ellwood on 28th February to see what can be done to obtain the necessary funding under the ‘Access for All’ programme to install the much needed new lifts.”
