Last night in New York a UK media company, owned and run by Bournemouth born Russell Crewe, won Gold at the New York Festivals International Radio Programmes Awards.

With Like It Is Media, Russell has made and overseen a variety of programmes for the BBC, including documentaries and features for Radio 4, the World Service, Radio 2 and Radio 1Xtra. He has also worked with UNICEF and MTV to produce the award winning Shuga Radio, a drama series and supporting magazine programmes, broadcast in English, French and Kiswahili, which tackled HIV and AIDS across Africa. Prior to taking over at Like It Is Media Russell was Commissioning Editor for Radio 1Xtra’s documentaries strand, having been part of the station’s launch team. He was also as a programme editor and reporter with Radio 1, Radio 1Xtra, and 5Live.

Their programme ‘The Story of Guru’ was named Best Music Special for 2013, securing the Gold Award. Produced for and broadcast on BBC Radio 1Xtra, the one hour documentary celebrated Guru, the legendary American rapper who made his name as one half of the unrivalled Hip Hop duo Gang Starr but whose untimely death was surrounded in controversy.

Receiving the award for Like It Is Media, Managing Director Russell Crewe said ‘It’s fabulous that a British radio programme has won international recognition. We’re delighted that Guru’s life and work has been marked and celebrated, and we’re honoured that the team’s hard work in bringing this programme together is appreciated.’

From conception to broadcast ‘The Story of Guru’ has been a collaborative production. Producer Susie Warhurst secured the essential interviews with Guru’s family and friends, Executive Producers Andrea Rose and Russell Crewe helped shape Susie’s programme structure, with MistaJam recording the script before Sound Designer Micky Curling blended the clips, music and wild track to complete the piece.

Russell Crewe, a Gang Starr fan, had the idea of making a programme about Guru:

‘Guru, Gang Starr, and Guru’s Jazzmatazz project are all still celebrated by fans worldwide. As the programme was being broadcast on British radio we discovered people were listening online across the globe, Tweeting their love for Guru from the UK, the USA and Europe, plus from places we’d not expected such as Taipei, Trinidad, Tanzania, Japan and Australia.’
