Back from the dark side: Greenpeace relaunches in Bournemouth and Poole
By Lee Williams
Greenpeace Bournemouth and Poole group has reopened with a petition-signing campaign in Bournemouth Square.
The new group assembled on Saturday at the entrance to the Lower Gardens to promote Greenpeace’s international ‘VW Dark Side’ campaign. Seven members of the Bournemouth and Poole and West Dorset Greenpeace groups gathered over 50 signatures to the petition against leading European car manufacturer Volkswagen.
The ‘VW Dark Side’ campaign satirises the hugely successful Volkswagen TV advertisement in which a young child dressed as Darth Vader tries to use ‘The Force’ to move objects. The Greenpeace campaign uses the imagery of Star Wars to paint VW as the ‘Dark Side’ with campaigners as ‘Jedi’ trying to turn them away from evil.
West Dorset Greenpeace activist, Len Herbert said: “Volkswagen claims to want to be the most eco-friendly car manufacturer in the world but behind the scenes it is lobbying against proposed European CO2 emission cuts. We have to turn them away from the Dark Side and encourage them to be the company they say they want to be.”
Saturday’s campaign in Bournemouth Square was the first event organised by the newly re-opened Greenpeace Bournemouth and Poole group. The group, which had been out of action for around 18 months, reformed recently thanks to a resurgence in local interest and with help from the West Dorset group.
Co-ordinator for the West Dorset group, Irene Statham said: “It’s great that we’re seeing such a renewed interest in environmental matters. Bournemouth and Poole is a large population centre and definitely needs it’s own Greenpeace representatives from passionate local people.”
Wimborne resident, Charlie Boughton was one of those local people who restarted the group. She said: “I feel really positive about Bournemouth and Poole having its own Greenpeace group again. I felt that I was already doing all I could as an individual, mow I wanted to be part of a group. I’m sure there are many other people in the local area who are feeling the same way as me.”
The newly reformed Bournemouth and Poole Greenpeace group will meet every 2nd Monday of the month starting in January. Visit http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/groups/dorset for details.
